What Is Narrative Intelligence?
Narrative intelligence is the systematic measurement and interpretation of how narratives, frames, emotions and conflict structures evolve across political and media discourse. It goes beyond counting topics or mentions. Its purpose is to understand how meaning is organized, repeated, amplified and changed over time.
What Does Narrative Intelligence Measure?
Political communication is rarely received as a neutral sequence of facts. Messages arrive with frames, emotional cues, implied roles, conflicts and judgments. Narrative intelligence treats these elements as analyzable structures.
Depending on the research question, measurement can include dominant frames, emotional patterns, ideological dimensions, narrative roles, conflict lines, issue salience, rhetorical intensity, source differences and changes over time.
How Is It Different From Media Monitoring?
Conventional media monitoring often asks what was mentioned, how often it appeared and whether coverage was positive or negative. Narrative intelligence asks a different set of questions: What interpretation is becoming dominant? Which actors are assigned responsibility? Which emotions organize the story? Which conflict structure is repeatedly reinforced? How does that pattern change across outlets, platforms or political actors?
How Is It Different From Framing Analysis?
Framing analysis is an important part of narrative intelligence, but it is not the whole concept. A frame describes how an issue is interpreted or presented. Narrative intelligence can combine framing with emotion, actor roles, ideological positioning, temporal dynamics and cross-source comparison.
Why Does Time Matter?
A single article or speech can be interesting, but political meaning is often cumulative. Repetition matters. Sequence matters. A frame that appears occasionally may become dominant. An emotional baseline can shift. A marginal conflict line can become the organizing logic of an election campaign.
For that reason, narrative intelligence is especially useful when applied to larger corpora and longer time periods rather than isolated texts.
What Is the Research Standard?
Claims should be tied to documented data, explicit measurement rules and reproducible analytical steps wherever possible. Large datasets do not automatically produce reliable conclusions. Source selection, coding validity, model performance, statistical assumptions and limitations all matter.
On this site, narrative intelligence is treated as an empirical research approach rather than a substitute for political judgment.
Where Is It Useful?
Typical research applications include election campaigns, media framing, ideological drift, political polarization, comparative political communication, candidate messaging and the interaction between political actors and journalism.
How Does This Relate to My Work?
My research uses narrative intelligence as one analytical lens within a broader program on political communication, media systems and political behavior in the United States and Germany. It is one method, not the definition of the entire research agenda.
For empirical examples, see the Research section. For the broader media environment in which these dynamics occur, see What Is an Algorithmic Media Democracy?
